How to feel more prepared for teaching

Moving over to the other side of the world to teach classes of hungry students hours of English can obviously be a rather daunting prospect, particularly for those with little to no prior teaching experience. However there are ways in which you can prepare yourself before you arrive in your new Teaching world.

Prepare some lessons

First of all, you are gonna need to think of some pretty entertaining and effective lesson plans. A good one to start with is the introduction lesson. Remember these kids will be new to you and you will be a fresh face for them. Plan a presentation of yourself. Show pictures of your homeland, your hometown. What are your interests? What sports do you like? Everyone likes photos and multimedia but remember to think of ideas for teaching the class should multimedia resources not be available. Improvisation is a key requirement for any good TEFL teacher.

Learn the language

Learning a language as different from English as Mandarin can seem intimidating. But just mastering a handful of key words and phrases can make a huge impact to tapping into your new classroom environment and empower you to give out basic commands. Many schools actually prefer teachers not to use any Chinese in lessons, however others may positively encourage it. Regardless, a little knowledge of Chinese will go miles to helping your everyday life out there.

Don’t take textbooks with you

Most schools have their own specific textbooks and the weight and size of them make a a logistical nightmare to even attempt to bring your own books to class. A much better idea would be to read around the subject. Sites like British council and busyteacher.org have endless blog posts and articles on how to teach English more effectively. So don’t worry about filling your precious luggage with cumbersome books. There will be plenty waiting for you upon your arrival!
