Xijiang Miao Village

A while back I went to a very remote and culturally different place in China and have been meaning to write about it ever since. This place is Xijiang, a remote mountain village in isolated Guizhou province and home to the Miao people; one of the ethnic minorities of China. This place is  becoming more and more popular than tourists and if burying relatives alive and drinking Rice wine from a yaks horn sounds interesting to you, then you may want to consider going…

The village is now a very popular tourist destination and has an abundance of hostels, guesthouses and hotels to choose from. People come for miles to see the Miao people in their traditional attire and the peaceful environment is very relaxing, perfect for some respite from Chinas busy cities.

How to get there

Getting there can be a little tricky and it is easiest reached from Guiyang, the provincial capital of Guizhou province. From Guiyang its a 2 hour train ride East to Kaili. From Kaili, its a one hour bus ride from the abundance of minibusses waiting for your trade at the train station. Transport there should cost 50-100RMB per person so make sure not to get ripped off.

Peaceful

The reason I love this place so much is that although its so touristy it seems a lovely retreat from the hectic urban life of the city. From the tribal folk performances to the endless surrounding mountain, Xijiang is definitely worth a visit.
