How to make the most of your 12 months in China

For many, twelve months seems like a lifetime, but in reality you will see just how quickly this time goes by! It is important not to waste any of this time sat in your flat missing home, instead of taking full advantage of this experience.

Make the most of the time you have with your students

China is in high demand for foreign teachers and are willing to pay three times the normal teacher salary. Working hours generally consist of no more than 5 classes a day and on average a 20-25 hour week. Which means you have an abundance of free time on your hands. During these working hours, make the most of teaching, gain insight about your students culture, and language (pick up key phrases), make lessons fun for students as both you and they will gain more from lessons.

Eat lots of English Chinese food

China is obviously home to the best Chinese food…. Do not attempt to find English restaurants or Irish pubs in China when you’re missing home! Dig into Chinese culinary delights at cheap prices! You can easily find food at street stalls in Markets. Don’t fear if you do not wish to eat dog, or horse anytime in your lifetime. You can order your favourite dishes that you would get at home, without dog!

Travel

Explore all the great historical and cultural attractions China has to offer in your free time. Through having weekends off you can easily make weekend getaways to other major cities or islands by using China’s great transport systems! Ask locals in your city where they would recommend to visit, as generally they know some hidden unspoilt locations!

Socialise!

Key thing to do during your time in China! Make friends, whether they may be local or expatriates or an amalgamation of the two! Many people are scared that they won’t make friends with locals without having prior knowledge of the language. However, locals are extremely friendly people and just by going out and socialising you will make friends whilst picking up the language! Make sure to visit local KTVs  (Chinese karaoke) in your city, get extra mandarin lessons if you are keen to perfect your language skills and explore the country with friends you meet along the way!
